Abstract
Cystosarcoma phyllodes is a rare breast lesion representing 0.5 percent of all breast tumor. When first described by J. Mueller in 1838, the lesion was thought to be a benign neoplasm without metastatic potential. Nevertheless, more reent reports
have
shown either recurrent or metastatic cystosarcoma phyllodes.
During 8 years from 1986 to 1993, we experienced 7 cases of cystosarcoma phyllodes in the department of Surgery, St. Vincent Hospital.
The clinical symptoms, pathological findings and therapeutic options in 7 patients with cystosarcoma phyllodes with retrospectively studied and analised. Painless breast lump was the most common clinical presentation.
The final pathological results revealed benign form cystosarcoma phyllodes in 5 patients and malignant form in 2 patients Two patients with the huge size of tumors including the one with malignant form tumor, underwent subcutaneous mastectomy.
Two
patients underwent lumpectomy. The remaining 3 patients underwent simple excision, modified radical mastectomy and simple mastetomy with axillary lymph node dissection each other. There was only one local recurrence in seven patients, with a mean
follow-up time of 6 years, but no distant metastases in this case.
